3 Quick & Easy Half-Up Hairstyles for Short Hair
These hairstyles can be done on any length of hair, but I did them specifically for short hair since us short hair girls are very limited on our options.
What you will need:
- bobby pins
- small elastics
- hairbrush/comb
Hairstyle #1
Step 1: Section off about 2 inch sections along the front hairline down to the earStep 2: Gather the sections together in the back of the head and secure with an elastic
Step 3: Create an opening between the elastic and the back of the head and flip the ponytail through it. For girls with short hair, when you do a half up hairstyle, I find the short ponytail part sticks out and flipping it through forces it to lay flatter.
(Sorry for the messy hair, I did this in less than a minute.)
Hairstyle #2
Step 1: Section about a 3 inch section in the back crown section of the head. The size of the section will depend on the thickness of your hair, mine is very thick so my section was only about 2 inches.
Step 2: Twist the section of hair in the direction you want the bun to wrap. Place your finger in the center and wrap the hair around it to form the bun shape.
Step 3: Hold the bun in place with one hand while placing bobby pins in to secure into place. The best way is to cross two bobby pins so they lock in place. If you have thicker hair, you may need more than two bobby pins.
Step 4: Section of the same size section from the front of the head on either side of your part. You have the option of leaving your bangs out.
Step 5: Smooth the section out so that it looks flattering from the front. Twist in the direction you want the bun to wrap and repeat the same steps as with the first bun. I find with the side sections, twisting them down rather than up helps them to wrap better at the back of my head.
Step 6: Repeat the same steps with a section of hair from the other side of the part to have a total of three buns. The buns can be straight across the head or more in a triangular shape like mine, all up to personal preference.
Step 7: Bobby pin any pieces sticking out that you do not like, and spray with some hairspray to lock the style in place.
Hairstyle #3
Who doesn't love braids? I just had to add a braided style into this.
Step 1: Section off two inch sections from the front of the head on either side of the part, from the part down to the ears.
Step 2: Braid each section with a basic three-strand braid. Direct the braid backwards as you braid so that it won't create any awkward bumps when we secure them in the back. Secure the end of each braid with a small elastic.
Step 3: Loosen up the braids by tugging on each of the links in the braid so it is as fluffy as you want it.
Step 4: Pull the braids back and secure them in the back with a small elastic. Remove the individual elastics from each of the braids once secured.
Step 5: Since the ponytail part of this style tends to stick out, I take one bobby pin and place it under the elastic, grabbing a piece of the elastic with the bobby pin and securing it under the hair. This helps the section to lay flat against the head.
